Plaza Manuel Tolsá, Mexico City
Facts and practical information
Manuel Tolsá Square is a rectangular-shaped square located in front of the old Tacuba Street, within the limits that form the first square of the Historic Center of Mexico City.
It is delimited, to the north, by the old Palace of the Secretariat of Communications and Public Works, to the south by Tacuba Street and the imposing and majestic building of the Palace of Mining, to the east by an old building erected in the eighteenth century, and to the west by the Frenchified Marconi building. Towards the southwest are located the Callejón de la Condesa and the Palacio Postal or Quinta Casa de Correos. The central part of this square is adorned by the equestrian statue of Charles IV, which people commonly know by the name of "El Caballito".
This space was opened after the demolition of the Hospital de San Andrés, which was built by the Franciscan Order in the times of the Viceroyalty. After the total demolition of this building during the Porfirian period, in 1905, it was decided to open a great public space as a presentation to one of the last great works that were built during the presidential period of Porfirio Diaz, and at the same time to serve as a public space through which the buildings built in the surroundings could be appreciated. This square was once landscaped and had large palm trees.
After the expansion of Paseo de la Reforma to the north of the city, "El Caballito" was moved from that location in 1979 to be placed in this square, where it remains.
