Moldova lies in a temperate climate zone, influenced by continental air masses. It is characterized by long and hot summers and relatively short, moderately mild winters.
The temperature in the hottest months ranges from 20°C - 25°C, sometimes there are hot days with temperatures around 30°C. The winter months are not very cold, with the mercury column falling to around -5°C on average. Typically, the northern part of the country is a few degrees cooler than the southern part and wetter.
Annual precipitation ranges from about 600 mm in the north to 400 mm in the south, and long periods of drought are not unusual. The rains are year-round and intensify in early summer and later autumn. They occur in the form of fleeting downpours and thunderstorms. Snow may fall in winter, but it does not last long.
