When Is the Best Time To Visit Montenegro?

The answer to the question of what is the best month to visit Montenegro depends on what you are interested in doing during your stay. Here you can see an overview of each month and its typical weather conditions.

Tourist Season in Montenegro

The best time to travel to Montenegro includes the summer months from June to August. The hot days encourage all kinds of recreation and activities, from beachcombing and sea bathing on the coast, to city sightseeing and mountain trekking inland.

The spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October) periods, despite being a bit cooler and rainier still make for a good time to visit. Particularly for those wishing to avoid the worst of the heat, as well as for tourists focused on exploring the country, hiking and touring.

The winter months (November through March) are outside the main tourist season. When organizing a trip during this time, it is important to take into account temperature drops and increased rainfall, and in some regions, snow. Unpredictable and capricious weather can somewhat complicate a visit. In the higher parts of the mountains, the winter ski season is underway.

The spring months herald the return of warmer and sunnier days. Temperatures reach 20°C and increase day by day, and you can count on about 6-8 hours of sunshine per day. There may be cloud cover, as well as fleeting rains, but they are not so frequent and intense as to significantly hamper your visit. Although it is not the best time for sea bathing and relaxing on the beaches, it is possible to organize round trips, hiking and sightseeing in the cities.

The resort towns on the Montenegrin Riviera are bustling with activity. Hot days can make sightseeing and hiking a bit difficult, so it's worth taking this into account. Summer is also the best time to organize climbs in the higher parts of the mountains.

The autumn months are a good time to visit Montenegro, especially for those who want to avoid the extreme heat. Days are warm, but not as hot as in the summer months - temperatures reach around 25°C. You can still beach and swim in the sea until the end of September. From mid-October, the weather becomes more capricious, mainly due to winds and rains.

Winter in coastal towns is usually mild (the temperature oscillates around 10°C), but it can be capricious and rainy. Days are foggy and windy, you can count on no more than 4 hours of sunshine a day, but not always.

Many hotels, restaurants and bars on the coast are closed during these months. In the central part of Montenegro and around the Dinaric Mountain ranges, the winter months are decidedly colder. Temperatures here drop to -10°C and it often snows, which can cause communication difficulties.

The high mountain ranges provide excellent conditions for skiing enthusiasts. The peak ski season is underway in the Kolašin and Žabljak areas.
