Climate of Montenegro

Montenegro lies in a subtropical climate zone, which, due to the diversity of terrain and the influence of the Adriatic Sea, comes in several varieties.

Coastal areas are characterized by the Mediterranean variety. Summers are warm and quite dry, while winters are very short, mild but rainy. The average summer temperature fluctuates between 24°C and 26°C. Due to the influx of warm tropical air masses, hot days with temperatures of up to 35°C are common. In winter, the mercury column drops to about 10°C, and it is more humid and rainy. Snowfall on the coast is rare. Spring and autumn are characterized by sunny weather and moderate temperatures. Annual precipitation is about 1300 mm - 2000 mm.

The central part of Montenegro lies in a subtropical continental climate zone, which is characterized by warmer summers than on the coast and harsher winters. The average summer temperature is around 30°C, with heat often reaching 40°C. Although winters are generally mild, however, there are also very cold days. Temperatures oscillate around 5°C, often dropping as low as -10°C. Rainfall generally does not exceed 1,000 mm per year, and snowfall can also occur in winter.

The ranges of the Dinaric Mountains are characterized by a mountain climate dependent on the height of the individual areas above sea level. It is characterized by cold and snowy winters and moderately warm summers. Winter temperatures range from 3°C to -10°C, while summer temperatures do not exceed 23°C. There is climatic stackedness, the higher above sea level the colder it is. The weather can be very capricious and changeable. Precipitation is very heavy, both rain and snow, and amounts to more than 4,000 mm per year. In the high parts of the mountains, inland, snow cover persists for a longer part of the year.
