Hassan Tower, Rabat

The Hassan Tower, a majestic minaret standing sentinel in the city of Rabat, Morocco, is an emblematic landmark that speaks of the country's storied past. Rising to an impressive height of 44 meters (about half of its intended 86 meters), this incomplete yet awe-inspiring tower was conceived as part of a grand mosque commissioned by the Almohad sultan Yacoub al-Mansour in the late 12th century.

Though the mosque itself was never completed due to the sultan's unexpected death in 1199, the remnants of this ambitious project still captivate visitors. The tower, with its intricate motifs and robust construction, showcases the pinnacle of Almohad architectural innovation and the Islamic influence on the region's culture.

The site, which also includes the remains of the mosque's foundation and over 200 columns, offers a glimpse into what could have been one of the largest mosques of its time. The original design would have mirrored the grandeur of the Koutoubia Mosque in Marrakech and the Giralda in Seville, both of which share similar architectural features.

Despite its unfinished state, Hassan Tower commands respect and admiration. Its presence is amplified by the Mausoleum of Mohammed V, a modern royal tomb that adds to the historical significance of the site. Together, they form a complex that is not only a tourist attraction but also a symbol of Moroccan identity and heritage.

Open to the public, the Hassan Tower and its surrounding esplanade invite visitors to stroll through history, offering panoramic views of Rabat and the nearby Bou Regreg river. The tower's ascent is barred, preserving its integrity, but the grandeur of the site is no less diminished from the ground.
