Alawite dynastyThe Alawite dynasty takes over. The family still rules Morocco today.

Spanish occupationSpain occupies northern Morocco.

Treaty of FezUnder the Treaty of Fez, France becomes a protector of Morocco.
1956
Independence from France & SpainMorocco gains independence from France and Spain. But Spain retains control of some territories.
1961
Hassan IIHassan II becomes king. He rules until his death in 1999.
1975
Green MarchKing Hassan sends 350,000 Moroccans into neighboring Spanish Sahara. The display of Moroccan power is known as the Green March. Spain eventually leaves the region. Morocco claims the area and renames it Western Sahara.
1976
Western Sahara conflictMoroccan and Algerian troops battle in Western Sahara.
1991
Cease-fire in Western SaharaThe United Nations monitors a cease-fire in Western Sahara. But clashes continue with rebels who want an independent Western Sahara.
