Kathmandu Durbar Square, Kathmandu

Nestled in the heart of Kathmandu, the capital city of Nepal, lies the historic and architecturally stunning Kathmandu Durbar Square. This ancient square is a spectacle of traditional Nepalese art and a testament to the city's rich cultural heritage. As one of the three Durbar (Royal Palace) Squares in the Kathmandu Valley, all of which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites, Kathmandu Durbar Square was once the place where the city's kings were crowned and legitimized.

The square is replete with palaces, courtyards, and temples, constructed between the 12th and 18th centuries by the Malla and Shah kings of Nepal. Its architecture showcases the skills of the Newar artists and craftsmen over several centuries. Some of the notable structures within the square include the Hanuman Dhoka Palace Complex, the Taleju Temple, and the Kumari Ghar — the residence of the Living Goddess, Kumari.

Hanuman Dhoka Palace, the former royal palace, is named after a statue of Hanuman, the monkey deity, which sits at the entrance. The palace is a complex of different halls and courtyards, each with its own historical and religious significance. The Taleju Temple, standing tall at 35 meters, is a majestic example of religious architecture in Nepal. It is dedicated to the goddess Taleju Bhawani and was erected by King Mahendra Malla in 1564.

The Kumari Ghar, a beautifully decorated three-story building, is where the Kumari, a young girl chosen as the living embodiment of the Hindu goddess Taleju, resides until she reaches puberty. Visitors can sometimes catch a glimpse of the Kumari as she appears at her window or in her courtyard.

The square was heavily damaged during the earthquake in 2015, but restoration efforts are ongoing. Despite the damage, the square remains a focal point for cultural festivals, rituals, and daily life in Kathmandu. Its open-air courtyards and intricate woodwork and stonework continue to captivate both locals and tourists alike.
