De Dog, Uitgeest
Facts and practical information
De Dog windmill in the Dutch municipality of Uitgeest was built in 1896 to drain the Castricummer polder, replacing an earlier mill that was struck by lightning during a severe weather event in 1895, killing two of the miller's daughters. In 1893, a steam-powered pumping station had been placed next to the old mill to reinforce the drainage system.
The Dog is equipped with a short and wide auger, with a wooden beam, and shoring of riveted iron. This auger can pump out a lot of water in a short time. Owner of De Dog is the Hoogheemraadschap Hollands Noorderkwartier. The mill is in operation regularly and can be visited by appointment.
During the heavy storm on October 28, 2013, the jib was damaged considerably. At the end of November both rods were ironed as that was planned anyway.
