Tweede Broekermolen, Uitgeest
Facts and practical information
The Tweede Broekermolen is a windmill built in 1631. The mill, with four more mills, drained the Uitgeester and Heemskerkerbroek polder. The windmill which is inhabited stands near the harbor area of Uitgeest, in the outlying area between the village of Uitgeest and Krommeniedijk.
The mill is an octagonal polder mill of the ground sailor type with a low, stone base and a wooden, thatched superstructure. The weighing is pot-bellied. The inside of the section above the house is black soot, as smoke from the stove used to pass through the mill.
The mill is an upper stage mill with an inner weir. The mill can be cruised with the crank wheel or with an electric motor. The weeding consists of wooden and iron rollers in wooden roller carriages, with several wooden rollers no longer carrying.
The sails are old Dutch and 26.20 m long. The welded iron rods of the manufacture Hoogovens were made in 1989 and cut in 1990. Before that the mill had so-called pot rods. The cast iron upper shaft cast in 1870 is from the Prins van Oranje in The Hague. The rods can be fastened to eyes, which are attached to the weigh of the wooden octagon.
The catch is a prop catch, which can be operated with a rocker rod and an inner catch drum. When the mill is running, the catch rests on a cleat on the rear hanger.
The water is raised by a steel auger, which has a diameter of 2 meters. The auger is driven by the lower pulley, which has two courses of combs. The outer passage is for light work when there is little wind and the inner one for heavy work when there is a lot of wind.
The mill also contains a lazy wheel, which is generally found only in corn mills, for hoisting materials and implements.
