De Herder, Medemblik
Facts and practical information
De Herder is an octagonal, thatched stilt mill and is located in Medemblik. It is an upper mill and has two pairs of grinding stones. Until 1947 there was an earlier mill on the same spot, which was then demolished because it had long since stopped working and was no longer needed. So when it was rebuilt, it could no longer be used. Nevertheless, the mill was built with several old parts: The wooden octagon was built in Wormer in 1695 and had served as an oil mill in Willeskop since 1904. In 1986 this mill frame was brought to Medemblik when people started thinking seriously about rebuilding it, the large wooden beams could still be revised and used.
The mill grinds grain on a voluntary basis and can be visited regularly from April to October. In the winter months the mill store is open. The mill is a national monument.
The barrow runs on wooden rollers.
