De Haar Castle
Facts and practical information
De Haar Castle, located near Utrecht in the Netherlands, is the largest fortress of its kind in the country and a breathtaking example of neo-Gothic architecture. Encircled by a moat and adorned with turrets, towers, and ornate decorations, this grandiose structure appears as if plucked from the pages of a fairy tale.
Built upon the ruins of its medieval predecessor, the current castle's restoration began in the late 19th century under the guidance of the famous Dutch architect Pierre Cuypers, known for his work on Amsterdam's Rijksmuseum and Central Station. The castle was reconstructed over a period of 20 years and completed in 1912, funded by the Rothschild family, relatives of the castle's owners.
Today, De Haar Castle operates as a museum, allowing visitors to step back in time and experience the opulence of the early 20th century. The interior showcases lavishly decorated rooms, antique furnishings, and a collection of art, providing a glimpse into the lives of the Dutch aristocracy. The castle is set within a sprawling, picturesque park with gardens that are meticulously maintained, reflecting the grandeur of the estate.
