Kasteel de Haar, Utrecht

Kasteel de Haar is the largest and most luxurious castle in the Netherlands, located near the city of Utrecht. This enchanting edifice, with its fairy-tale appearance, is nestled within expansive, meticulously manicured gardens and parklands. The current structure dates back to the late 19th century when it was fully restored from ruins under the guidance of the famous Dutch architect Pierre Cuypers, known for designing Amsterdam's Rijksmuseum and Central Station.

The castle's origins trace back to the 13th century, but it was the comprehensive restoration commissioned by the Baron and Baroness Van Zuylen van Nijevelt that transformed Kasteel de Haar into the impressive Neo-Gothic marvel seen today. The restoration was such a massive project that it took nearly 20 years to complete, from 1892 to 1912, and included the installation of modern conveniences that were rare at the time, such as central heating and a lift.

Kasteel de Haar is more than just a classic medieval fortress; it is adorned with luxurious interiors, richly decorated with rare tapestries, historical furnishings, and priceless paintings, showcasing the grandeur and wealth of the Van Zuylen family. The castle's park and gardens, spanning over 55 hectares, were designed in collaboration with landscape architect Hendrik Copijn and feature romantic waterworks, picturesque bridges, and stunning flora.

Today, Kasteel de Haar is open to the public, offering a glimpse into the opulent lifestyle of the late 19th and early 20th centuries' Dutch aristocracy. Visitors can explore the resplendent rooms and halls, learn about the castle's history through guided tours, and wander through the tranquil gardens. The castle also hosts various events throughout the year, such as Christmas fairs, classical concerts, and historical festivals.
