Wertheimpark, Amsterdam
Facts and practical information
The Wertheim Park is a small park in the Plantage neighborhood in Amsterdam. It is located on Plantage Middenlaan, Plantage Parklaan and Nieuwe Herengracht, opposite the Amsterdam Hortus Botanicus. It is the only park located within the boundaries of the Centrum district. The park is named after the Amsterdam Jewish entrepreneur and philanthropist Abraham Carel Wertheim. On August 14, 1942, during the German occupation in World War II, a number of Amsterdam's street and park names were changed by decree of Mayor Edward Voûte. These were streets and parks named after the Dutch royal family or Jews. The Wertheim Park was also renamed. Until after the end of the war in May 1945 the park was called "Parktuin". On the pillars next to the main entrance to the park, on the corner of Plantage Middenlaan and Plantage Parklaan, are white marble sphinxes crowned with lanterns.
In the park, which covers 0.75 hectares, is a natural stone fountain from 1898, designed by the architect Jonas Ingenohl. The fountain's inscription reads "To the poor help, to the weak staff, to man's friend, a wake-up call to life, to the artist to support, to the slow to railroad, deplored by city and country." A plaque shows the portrait of Wertheim.
The Dutch Auschwitz Committee organizes the National Holocaust Commemoration here annually on the last Sunday in January.
