Lage vuurtoren van IJmuiden
Facts and practical information
The Lage vuurtoren van IJmuiden is an emblematic beacon of light in the Netherlands, guiding mariners as they navigate the waters of the North Sea. This historical lighthouse, built in 1878, stands proudly at the mouth of the North Sea Canal in IJmuiden, a testament to the maritime heritage of the region.
Despite its name, which translates to "Low Lighthouse of IJmuiden" in English, the structure is anything but insignificant. It is one of a pair, its partner being the Hoog vuurtoren van IJmuiden or "High Lighthouse of IJmuiden." Together, these two towers have long served as a crucial navigational aid, ensuring the safety of vessels entering and leaving the busy port.
The lighthouse is constructed from cast iron, a popular material in the 19th century, and it stands at a height of approximately 24 meters. Over the years, it has withstood the harsh marine environment, a silent witness to the evolution of maritime technology and the ebb and flow of the tides.
