Bergsingelkerk, Rotterdam

The Bergsingel Church is a church designed in 1913 by architect Tjeerd Kuipers.

The Reformed Church is located in the middle of the Liskwartier district of Rotterdam on the corner of Bergsingel and Bergselaan. The church stands out because of its substantial contours. It is built as a cruciform church, with the floor plan largely following the contours of the available plot. The church is built in a rationalistic style influenced by the work of H.P. Berlage with characteristics of Jugendstil.

On June 2, 1914, the first stone was laid by Rev. J.H. Landwehr and on April 8, 1915, the building was dedicated.

The most impressive feature of the church is its façade with the two towers. There was also room for swinging bells, but the lack of funds prevented an immediate purchase. Only in 1954 was enough money available to purchase four bells.

The largest bell weighs 420 kg and has a diameter of 86 cm; the second bell weighs 250 kg and has a diameter of 72 cm; the third bell weighs 175 kg and has a diameter of 64 cm; the fourth bell weighs 110 kg and has a diameter of 54 cm. The bells are suspended in a combined loudspeaker, equipped with electric ringing devices.

In 1955, the bells cast by the firm of Van Bergen in Heiligerlee were installed.

After a long discussion about the future of the church building, it finally received municipal monument status on May 5, 2000.
