Hernen
Facts and practical information
Castle Hernen is a Dutch castle from the 14th century.
Hernen Castle is located in the south of Gelderland, in the village of Hernen, in the far west of the Rijk van Nijmegen. It was probably created around 1350, and at that time consisted only of a residential tower. Later it was repeatedly expanded, with the former courtyard becoming more and more built up. The residential tower collapsed in the 18th century.
The castle has not been inhabited since the 17th century and has never been under siege. Partly because of this, little has been rebuilt and it is well preserved. It is the only castle in the Netherlands with covered weather corridors.
In 1883 it was bought by the Den Tex family. A daughter donated the castle in April 1940 to the Friends of the Castles of Gelderland Foundation, which was established for this purpose. Part of the castle is accessible; another part is home to the A.A. Brediusstichting.
In 1968, the television series Floris was filmed at this castle, among others.
