Sint Willibrorduskerk, Bronckhorst
Facts and practical information
St. Willibrordus Church is a Roman Catholic church in the Gelderland town of Hengelo. The church was built in the years 1842 - 1843 to the design of H. Bauer, who was employed by the Department of Public Works. The church is therefore a waterworks church. The land for the church was made available by Wilhelmina Henrica Christiaens, who had purchased the piece of land before her death and stipulated its future use in her will. After the consecration of the church in 1843 and the establishment of the patron saint Willibrord, the church still belonged to the Saint John the Baptist parish with the Saint John the Baptist Church in Keijenborg as its main church until 1862.
The church was built as a pseudobasilica. In 1883 the church tower collapsed due to a storm. A new spire was built on this. In 1924 a major restoration was carried out, installing stained glass windows, replacing the plastered ceilings with stone vaults and adding a sandstone relief to the front facade.
The church is a national monument.
