Great Church, Weesp
Facts and practical information
The Grote of Sint-Laurenskerk is a church building on the Kerkstraat/Nieuwstraat in the center of the North Holland town of Weesp.
The church was built between 1429 and 1462 as a late Gothic cruciform church, on the site where a Romanesque church had previously stood. In 1577 the church passed into Protestant hands. In the process, much of the church furniture was lost, but the Gothic choir screen from around 1525 was preserved.
Atop the Romanesque tower, a remnant of the earlier church, is a carillon, cast in 1671 by the famous bell-founder Pieter Hemony of Amsterdam.
The church building is a national monument. It is used by the Protestant Congregation of Weesp and Driemond.
