Skansen, Tromsø
Facts and practical information
Skansen in Tromsø is a fortification and is considered to be the most valuable cultural -historical facility in the municipality. Festningsvollen is the only visible medieval track in the city. The Fortress has been built on an artificial island in the Tromsøundet, and towards the land side a stream ran down where Nordre Tollbugate now goes, and then divided into two and formed a ramp. The dating of the Fortress Agency varies from the 1000s to the 1400s, while the 13th century and Håkon Håkonsson's church building on Tromsøya have often been mentioned as a possible occasion.
The buildings on Skansen are the oldest buildings in Tromsø. They have previously been used as a customs dump, housing, schools, epidemilasarette, nursing home and city museum.
