The Himalayan wolf is a captivating and somewhat disputed creature, mainly due to its distinctive genetic composition. It shares certain genetic traits with the Holarctic grey wolf, the Tibetan wolf, and the African golden wolf. Some scientists contend that it should be classified as its own species, but presently, it is known as the "Himalayan wolf" and is scientifically designated as Canis lupus chanco.

Research indicates that the Himalayan wolf diverged from other canids around 800,000 years ago. This separation has resulted in unique genetic traits, notably adaptations that enable the wolf to thrive in high-altitude environments. Unfortunately, the population has faced significant challenges, including historical declines and genetic bottlenecks. Their habitat encompasses the Tibetan Plateau and adjacent areas. Behaviorally, they exhibit unique howling patterns and demonstrate a preference for wild prey over livestock. However, as wild prey becomes increasingly scarce, conflicts with herders can arise.
