Jaro Cathedral, Iloilo

Jaro Cathedral, officially known as the Jaro Metropolitan Cathedral and the National Shrine of Our Lady of the Candles, stands as a monumental spiritual hub in the heart of Iloilo City, Philippines. This historical church, dating back to the 19th century, is not just a place of worship but a significant landmark that embodies the rich cultural and religious heritage of the region.

Constructed in 1874, Jaro Cathedral is renowned for its striking architecture, featuring a mix of Romanesque revival and Gothic elements. The cathedral was severely damaged by an earthquake in 1948 but was subsequently restored, preserving its historical significance and spiritual essence.

One of the cathedral's most unique features is the separate belfry located across a busy street, which is uncommon among Philippine churches. This belfry, which once doubled as a watchtower against invaders, contributes to the cathedral's distinctive silhouette against Iloilo's skyline.

Jaro Cathedral is also famous for housing the miraculous image of the Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria (Our Lady of the Candles). The image is enshrined above the cathedral's main entrance, making it the only Marian statue in the country to be canonically crowned by a pope, Pope John Paul II, in his visit to Iloilo in 1981.

The cathedral serves as the seat of the Archdiocese of Jaro, and each year, it becomes the focal point of the Feast of Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria, celebrated every February 2nd. This event draws thousands of devotees and tourists, who come to witness the religious festivities and participate in the grand procession.
