Nature monuments in Wrocław are established by the Act on Nature Protection of 7 April 1949 and subsequent acts passed in later years. As the first one, the pedunculate oak called Dziadek, growing near Szczytnicki Park, was recognized as a nature monument on February 16, 1953.
According to the legal status as of December 2021, there are 111 nature monuments in Wroclaw, including two monuments of inanimate nature, 94 of them are single objects - 91 trees, 2 climbers and 1 petrified trunk, 17 nature monuments are groups of protected objects - 14 groups of trees, 2 alleys and 1 group of petrified trunks. In total, 187 trees, 23 petrified trunks and 2 climbers are protected. In terms of species diversity, the most numerous are pedunculate oaks - 91, plane trees - 25, common yews - 10, pedunculate elm and Japanese sofas - 8 each. The largest concentrations of nature monuments are in the Botanical Garden - 11, Leśnicki Forest - 8 and Strachowicki Park - 6.
