Katownia, Gdańsk
Facts and practical information
Katownia - was built in the second half of the 14th century as a medieval fortification of the Main Town in Gdańsk. Together with the Prison Tower it was the front gate of Dluga Street.
The hangman's quarters were rebuilt in 1593-1604 by Antoni van Obberghen, the decorations were made by Willem van der Meer. The Prison Tower reached its present height in 1508-1509, thanks to Michal Enkinger.
After the modern fortifications were erected, the function of the entire building was changed to an execution house, courtroom and prison. On the east side of the Prison Tower there was a pillory, the place of many executions. Today the Hangman's House houses a branch of the Gdansk Museum.
