Market, Wodzisław Śląski
Facts and practical information
Market Square in Wodzisław Śląski - the central square of the city of Wodzisław, one of the largest markets in Silesia.
It was laid out in 1257 when the town was founded. It has a square shape with the dimensions of 96 × 96 meters. The foundation of such a large square testified to the great plans of the founder, Prince Wladyslaw Opolski, for Wodzislaw. Currently, the southern part of the square is paved, while the northern part is a small park with benches and bushes and trees around a fountain. To this day many houses from 19th century have been preserved.
In the Middle Ages in the market place stood: the town hall, pillory and a deep well. Around the market square there are many historic city streets: Kubsza Street, Zgody Street, Powstańców Śląskich Street, Minorites, Piłsudskiego, and Wałowa Street. Above the northern wall of the square on a hill is the historic Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, towering over the Old Town.
In the immediate vicinity of the market square there are also a historic former Franciscan monastery, a former synagogue, the Wodzisław castle and a monument to Silesian insurgents.
