Wieża Romantyczna, Wodzisław Śląski
Facts and practical information
Knights' Tower in Wodzisław Śląski - a neo-Gothic, approximately 20-meter-high historic tower built between 1867 and 1868 in the town forest on the historic Grodzisk by the then owner of the town, the staunch romantic Edward Brauns, who died in 1881, 13 years after its erection.
In 1925, Stefan Krzystek and Jan Kowol, merchants from Wodzisław, became the owners of the tower and the adjacent land. They made it into a lookout point and a restaurant, which involved a major renovation. According to the memorial book of that time, as many as 338 people climbed there on the first day of its opening. After 13 years, in 1938, the tower began to fall into disrepair, and so it was until 1991, when the Society of Visitors to the Wodzisław Region restored it.
A viewing point with a telescope was created on the renovated tower in 1991, and the flags of Poland and TMZW flew at the top. The four levels of the structure housed chambers used for the presentation of works by local artists and monuments. Again after 13 years in June 2004 the tower was set on fire by unknown perpetrators and fell into ruin.
In 2012, the walls and exterior façade were renovated. In the summer of 2020, the next stage of the revitalization of the Tower began, which is to once again serve as an observation tower. The work was completed in 2021.
