Facts and practical information
Stanislaw Moniuszko Park in Poznan - a historic park with an area of 2.2 hectares located in the center of Poznan, located between the streets Libelta, Noskowskiego, Chopin and Al. Niepodległości.
Next to Wilson Park, it is the oldest object of this type in the city. It was created in about 1870 as a private garden, in 1905 it was bought from councillor Fehlan by the city and transformed into a public garden. Since then, it has been reconstructed several times. The official opening took place on August 2, 1905, with the main entrance located at the intersection of Libelta and Chopin streets. In 1907, on the 75th anniversary of Goethe's death, it was named after him. In 1913 in the center of the building was placed the sculpture In the Bath by Max Klinger, purchased in 1908 from the funds of the Jewish foundation of Samuel Jaffe. It was one of four bronze copies of the original standing in the Leipzig City Museum. The present appearance of the park dates to 1946, when it was opened after severe war damage. The flowerbeds were replaced with extensive lawns, and the beech trees were cut down by artillery. As a result of the post-war neglect and frosts, magnolias, rhododendrons, sycamores and cypresses that had been planted there died out. The present tree stand in the park consists of hornbeams, English oaks and crabapple trees. In 1953-1955, 10 species of birds used to nest in the park - starlings, blackbirds, titmice, flycatchers, black-tailed godwits and black-winged warblers.
In the park there is a statue of Stanisław Moniuszko from 1924, made by Marcin Rożek - a gift of the Singers' Union and the president Cyril Ratajski. In 1923 a bust of Fryderyk Chopin was unveiled in the park, which was moved to the park in his name in 1961.
For many years the U.S. consulate was located on Chopina Street, and its surroundings were an informal meeting place for the opposition during the communist era. In the same street there is a house where Cyril Ratajski lived.
