Racibórz Penitentiary Institution - a closed-type penitentiary for repeat offenders, with a therapeutic ward for convicts with non-psychotic mental disorders or mental retardation. It also has wards for temporarily arrested people and a ward for first-time offenders employed on the outside.

As a remand prison, it covers the area of operation of Prosecutor's Offices and Courts in Racibórz, Wodzisław Śląski, Żory, Rybnik with a local center in Żory, and a local center of the District Court in Gliwice with its seat in Wodzisław Śląski. The number of people employed in the facility in 2008 was over 253 officers and civil employees. At the beginning of 2009 it decreased to about 230 people.
