Kościół pw. Świętego Wojciecha i Matki Boskiej Śnieżnej, Mikołów
Facts and practical information
The Church of St. Adalbert and Our Lady of the Snows, commonly known as the old church, is the oldest surviving church in Mikołów. The first church was built between 1260 and 1270 north of today's Market Square. The details of the late Gothic architecture allow us to assume that it was slightly rebuilt at the end of the Middle Ages. From the mid-16th to the mid-17th century it was used by Lutherans. The church is built of broken stone, oriented, with one nave. The nave was built on a rectangular plan, to which a polygonal closed presbytery adjoins. A quadrilateral tower adjoins the body of the church from the west; it was added in the 18th century.
In front of the church there is an antique statue of St. John of Nepomuk. Inhabitants of the town founded it in the 18th century to thank for the restoration of water in the town well.
Until the new church was built, it bore the name of St. Adalbert alone. When the new building was consecrated on September 25, 1861, both churches were St. Adalbert. This state of affairs continued until the 1960s, when the old church was given a second invocation, Our Lady of the Snows, venerated in Mikołów as Our Lady of Mikołów.
