Hałda Skalny
Facts and practical information
Rocky - heap of post-mining waste in Łaziska Górne by the Bolesław Śmiały coal mine. The heap has a relative height of 92 m and covers an area of 30 ha. The weight of the accumulated rock material is estimated at 17 million tons. It is one of the largest in Europe.
The heap is primarily clay rocks, sometimes sandstone. The most common clay minerals are kaolinite and mica. The mine has been in operation since the end of the 18th century, and post-mining waste on "Skalny" was accumulated for 86 years, from 1912 to 1998.
For many years, spontaneous combustion of materials occurred in the heap, giving off carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides. Currently the heap is extinguished. To extinguish the heap, an innovative method was used, using ashes from a nearby power plant.
From the top of the heap there is an extensive panorama - you can see, among others, Tychy, Katowice, Halemba Power Plant, Rybnik Power Plant, and from further places and objects, the peaks of the Silesian Beskids and Jaworzno Power Plant.
Hałda Skalny is located on the area belonging to Bolesław Śmiały Coal Mine. Climbing to its top is officially forbidden.
