Cerkiew św. Mikołaja
Facts and practical information
St. Nicholas Orthodox Church - an Orthodox parish church in Dratow. It belongs to Lublin deanery of Lublin-Chelm Diocese of the Polish Autocephalous Orthodox Church.
The first Orthodox church in Dratow was founded before 1490, and it became the seat of an independent parish in the next century. It belonged to the Uniate Diocese of Chelm. In the period when the parish belonged to the Uniates, two new churches were built in Dratow in the 18th century and in 1870, each time due to the poor technical condition of the older church. The church became the property of the Orthodox Church after the dissolution of the Uniate Diocese of Chelm in 1875.
The contemporary existing church in Dratov was built in 1888-1889 according to the project of Viktor Sychugov. It represents the Byzantine-Russian style, which was in use in the Russian religious architecture of the second half of the nineteenth century. The building was in use from the moment of its consecration in 1889 until the evacuation of the Orthodox population in 1915. Since 1923 it was again the seat of the parish. Its functioning ceased after murder of its pastor, priest Stefan Malesza, which was committed by Gestapo on 15 August 1942. In 1947, in connection with the deportation of Ukrainian Orthodox population, the church was closed. Abandoned sacral object began to serve the liturgy again in 1959. In the 60's of the XX century and in 2007-2008 it was thoroughly renovated.
