Dwór Biskupi, Nysa
Facts and practical information
Bishop's Mansion in Nysa - a historic building, which is the largest surviving element of the now defunct Nysa castle of the Bishops of Wrocław. It is located next to the Bishop's Palace, with which it used to be connected by a porch running over the street and a moat.
In 1260, in the place between today's Grodzka and Lompa streets a fortified bishop's mansion, also called a castle, was erected. This residence was rebuilt many times, and in 1459 it was surrounded by farm buildings based on the south-eastern section of the defensive walls.
The castle was almost completely demolished in 1842, some of the rooms were then used as artillery workshops or for other military purposes. Only the residential tower and the Gothic tower with a fragment of the defensive wall have survived.
The one-story, baroque building now called the manor house was built at the end of the 17th century. It was destroyed during World War II, but rebuilt in 1950. For many years it housed the headquarters of the "Pokój" Disabled Persons' Cooperative. At the gate, behind the drawbridge, over the moat, the water levels during the floods which for centuries haunted the Nysa are marked on the wall, including the last one in 1997.
The building is currently in very poor condition.
