Anielska fontanna, Bolków
Facts and practical information
Angel fountain - a fountain located in 1858 on the site of the former Evangelical church in Bolkow. It was made of gray granite, has an oval shape.
When the castle was under the rule of the Cistercians, the fountain was located near the Catholic church. The relocation was arranged by Count Hoym and paid for by Henriette Kramsta. Since then, the fountain has stood halfway between the Catholic church and the town hall.
At that time, in the center of the fountain was placed a tin figure of a boy reading a Bible held in his right hand, resting his left hand on the page of the book. At his feet there was a pewter bowl. The boy was dressed in a robe resembling a tunic tied around his waist. The author of the sculpture and the cast remains unknown. It is not known exactly how the fountain received the name of angel fountain, it is suggested that it was because of the appearance of the boy or that the name came from an angel well or spring.
The statue was stolen, probably in 1948-1951. In 1982 the pedestal, on which the statue originally stood, was encased in stone and thus a bowl was created. In the middle of the bowl there was a metal pipe from which water gushed out for several months of the year.
In 2001, thanks to the efforts of the city authorities and the former inhabitant and honorary citizen of Bolkow Hans-Jochen Meier, its sandstone replica was placed in the place of the lost statue.
In September 2005 a twin statue was erected next to the municipal office in Borken.
