Zagroda Sitarska, Biłgoraj
Facts and practical information
Zagroda Sitarska is an open-air museum located in Biłgoraj, depicting the old Sitar tradition in the city and the appearance of typical Biłgoraj buildings from the 16th to the 19th century. Nadstawna. The ethnographic museum consists of: dwelling house of sitarza Andrzej Grabiński, woodshed, granary, coach house, livestock building and beehives. The whole is surrounded by a wire and rail fence. Around the open-air museum there is an estate of multi-storey blocks of flats.
The buildings date back to the beginning of the 19th century. Until the 20th century, such buildings were characteristic of the town. In the 1970s, thanks to the efforts of Józef Dechnik, Biłgoraj experienced a period of rapid development. Neighborhood of Nadstawna street, one of the oldest streets in the city where many such houses were located, was transformed into a large housing estate of blocks of flats. The sitar homestead is the only old house on Nadstawna Street that has been saved from destruction.
The 1810 dwelling house is wooden and has a half-timbered frame. It is covered with a hipped shingle roof and has a main entrance and a small porch supported by four columns on the street side. Inside, the house is divided into two halves, each of which contains a kitchen and a room. One room is a sitar workshop - linens were woven here. There are cellars under the house. The entire building is set on a high foundation. The windows are typical for "Biłgoraj type" houses. - They are large and divided into twelve parts. A characteristic feature of Biłgoraj houses was that they contained expensive furniture and equipment, which wealthy sitars wandering around the world could afford. Hair nets, bristle nets and wire nets for sieves are exhibited in the house.
Behind the house there is a courtyard. There is a woodshed adjacent to the house - a simple wooden building used for storing fuel. In Biłgoraj the woodshed was usually part of the sitar workshop.
A granary is located next to the woodshed. It has two rooms and an attic. At the front wall of the granary there are arcades. Pots for grain and grain milling equipment are exhibited here.
The livestock building is a former stable. Nowadays, it presents the manufacture of shells for binding screens, shingle and spindle making, cooperage, wheelwrighting, pottery, and oil-making.
The exhibits are complemented by objects set in the courtyard - a reconstructed old treadle wheel, log hives and several gates and wickets characteristic of the old buildings of Bilgoraj.
