Wzgórze Beaty, Katowice

Beata Hill - a hill 334.5 m above sea level located in Katowice, in the southern part of Tadeusz Kościuszko Park.

Beata Hill is the watershed between the Vistula and Odra catchment areas. Water from the northern slopes flows into the Rawa River and from the southern slopes into the Kłodnica River. In the north-south direction through the hill runs one of the longest streets in Katowice - Tadeusz Kościuszki Street.

Already by the end of the 18th century coal was being temporarily extracted from shallow seams or seams reaching the surface. The name of the hill derives from the "Beata" mine, the first mine in today's Katowice..

In 1903 a 20-metre high Bismarck Tower was erected on the hill. The hill and the adjacent suburban birch and pine forests were transformed into Süd Park, which in 1912 was connected to the center of the growing city by a streetcar line. After incorporation of this area to Poland in 1925 the park was named after Tadeusz Kościuszko. The Bismarck Tower was dismantled in 1934. In the 1930s, the wooden Church of St. Michael the Archangel with a bell tower was built on Beata Hill, moved from Syryn. In the winter season a small toboggan run is open near the peak.

In the eastern part of Beata Hill, housing estates were built in the years after World War II: the Ptasie Estate, established in the 1960s, and the Zgrzebnioka Estate, built in 1978-1990.
