Tunel schronowy
Facts and practical information
Strzyżów shelter tunnel - an underground railroad shelter for the staff train of Third Reich Chancellor Adolf Hitler, built during World War II under Żarnowska Góra in Strzyżów, Podkarpackie Province. It was part of Hitler's Anlage Süd headquarters in Stępin-Cieszyna and Strzyżów.
The shelter in Strzyżów, in the form of an approximately 438-meter-long reinforced concrete underground tunnel secured by a massive iron door, was built between 1940 and 1941 by the Nazi Organisation Todt; in addition to the tunnel, accompanying structures such as back-up shelters and an additional installation tunnel were constructed in the area. In late August 1941, Hitler's Führersonderzug "Amerika" stopped there before Hitler's meeting with Benito Mussolini at Stępin.
After World War II, the tunnel was used for utility purposes, including as a garage and warehouse. Today it is open to the public.
