Facts and practical information
Church of Christ the King and Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Rawicz is a Roman Catholic parish church in Rawicz. It belongs to Rawicz deanery. It is located on the plot of land between Kościelna Street and Staszica Street. It is the youngest of the three catholic churches within the city limits, however for historical reasons it is called Rawicz parish church.
The church was built in 1900-1902 as the first Catholic church in a town dominated by Protestants. Previously, Catholics in Rawicz had used the parish church in Łaszczyn, as well as the Reformed Franciscan church of St. Anthony, which was located on the site of the present Penitentiary. An independent parish in Rawicz was erected in 1867. The task of building the much anticipated church was entrusted to parish priest Paweł Dams. The design of the neo-Gothic building was prepared by the Wroclaw architect Alexis Langer, the author of numerous churches in Wielkopolska, Lower and Upper Silesia. The first Holy Mass was celebrated in the church on October 14, 1902. The consecration ceremony took place on May 5, 1907 under the presidency of Bishop Edward Likowski, suffragan of Poznan.
The original invocation was that of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary. On October 10, 1961 it received a second name: "Christ the King", thanks to the decree of the Primate of Poland, Cardinal Stefan Wyszynski. On May 22, 1993 Archbishop Jerzy Stroba erected a Chapel of Perpetual Adoration in the church.
It is a neo-Gothic, pseudo-hall church. The soaring octagonal tower is the highest building in the city. The interior is also neo-Gothic: the high altar from 1902, two side altars, including the southern one with the picture of Our Lady of Rawicz from 1871, a pulpit, organs, and confessionals.
Colloquially known as the "red" church.
Near the church are the Elizabethan nuns' religious house, the rectory building, the square with the statue of St. Stanislaus Kostka, and the monument to Pope John Paul II in the planty.
