Rezerwat Mechelińskie Łąki
Facts and practical information
Mechelińskie Łąki Nature Reserve - a faunal nature reserve on the Kashubian Coast located within the Nadmorski Landscape Park in the municipality of Kosakowo, adjacent to the Bay of Puck. The area of the reserve is 113.47 ha, it has also a buffer zone of 99.52 ha. The purpose of the reserve's protection is "preservation of breeding sites and habitats of valuable species of water and mud birds, rush and meadow communities and specific halophylous habitats and water conditions typical for them".
The dune part of the reserve was a breeding site for protected and rare bird species. In the reserve there was also one of the last breeding sites of dunlin in Poland. Protected bird species such as crane, bittern, common snipe, spotted duck, and marsh harrier still nest in the wetlands.
Apart from birds, the reserve is a sanctuary for anuran amphibians, most of the domestic species were found here, including all three toads, particularly noteworthy is the presence of the striped toad, rare in Poland.
The most valuable flora species found in the reserve include sea myrobalan and stands of saltmarsh.
The reserve is undergoing dramatic, negative changes. In the beginning, breeding birds and their habitats were harmed by the abandonment of cattle grazing and arbitrary earthworks, the rest is completed by uncontrolled tourism. There are no more nesting birds on the dunes and beaches, the number of protected plants decreases every year because they are trampled by people. This is despite the fact that pedestrian traffic between Rewa and Mechelinky is only allowed along the beach.
