Zamek Chudów
Facts and practical information
Chudów Castle - ruins of a Renaissance castle in Chudów from the 1630s, built by nobleman Jan Saszowski of Gierałtowice on the site of a wooden defensive tower. It was built of stone and brick, originally on a rectangular plan, with a central courtyard with galleries and a well. The layout had two three-storey residential buildings, covered with high gable roofs and a quadrilateral five-storey tower, covered with a high hipped roof, with the main entrance on the south-west side, with a wooden bridge over the castle moat. The sixth storey was added during a nineteenth-century reconstruction carried out by Alexander von Bally, the owner of the castle at that time. In 1874 the castle burned down.
In 1995 the "Chudów Castle" Foundation was established, whose founder and first president was Andrzej Sośnierz. After taking over the building in 1999, the foundation began reconstruction and excavation work. By 2004 the castle tower was rebuilt and covered with a roof, which now houses the museum of Chudów Castle, presenting the artefacts obtained during the archaeological research of the site. The walls around the courtyard were also raised and the gates were renovated. Archival research was also undertaken and resulted in publications on the history of the castle by the Foundation's publishing house. Since 1996 outdoor cultural and educational events have been organized within the castle grounds, including historical re-enactments, rallies, concerts, film screenings and cabaret performances. The visiting card and the oldest element of the Meetings is the Medieval Fair held in August.
About 150 meters from the castle grows the oldest lush poplar tree in Poland, called Tekla. The tree has a large space in its trunk arranged as a "Pooh's Hut". The poplar has had the status of a natural monument since 1981.
