Pomnik Matki Polki, Racibórz
Facts and practical information
Polish Mother's Monument - a bronze monument to all Silesian mothers raising their children in the spirit of Polish patriotism, located at Mostowy Square in Racibórz, near the bed of the Oder River. It was designed by visual artist Jan Borowczak. It depicts an upright woman with a child in her arms, boldly looking and striding forward.
The proposal to build a monument came up at a meeting of Polish women in Racibórz. In order to realize the project a civic committee for building the monument was established. In 1971, during the Uprising Appeal on Góra Świętej Anny, the foundation act was pronounced.
Initially, the monument was to have a different shape and the woman, instead of one, was to hold three children, symbolizing the three Silesian uprisings, and be dressed in a regional costume. However, this concept did not gain acceptance at the Ministry of Culture. The funds for the construction were obtained from state subsidies, the fund of the Council for Protection of Struggle and Martyrdom Monuments and from contributions within the framework of social deeds. It was cast in Gliwice Zakłady Urządzeń Technicznych. It consists of 30 elements with a total weight of 3 Mg and a height of 6.7 m. The ceremonial unveiling of the monument took place on July 14, 1973 in the presence of representatives of the authorities and 20,000 people gathered. This ceremony became the background for the events of one of the stories by Brunon Strzałka, published in the collection entitled Godki i bojki śląskie. For some time, it was a tradition for newlyweds to lay flowers in front of the monument. The statue is also called the "Silesian Nike".
