Wieża ciśnień przy ulicy 1 Maja, Racibórz
Facts and practical information
Water Tower at 1 Maja St. in Racibórz - a decommissioned brick water tower in Racibórz located on the grounds of the municipal water supply plant at 8 1 Maja St. It was put into operation on September 23, 1874. The land for the tower and other plant buildings was bought gradually, some of it in 1838, the rest in 1862. The tower is 25 m high, and the capacity of the tank with a flat bottom, made of 10 mm thick steel sheet and set at a height of 23 m, is 500 m3. Water for the reservoir was drawn from the nearby Odra River. It was then purified in sand filters and pumped into the reservoir by means of pumps with a total power of 30 KM. Initially, the main customer was the railroad station adjacent to the plant, as well as the developing industry in Racibórz. In the 1930s, the tower became insufficient for the city's needs. So the decision was made to build another tower in Stara Wieś, however the old tower continued to supply most of the city, as the newly built tower produced too much pressure and was also used by the Nazis for ideological and propaganda purposes. Currently, the Racibórz Water and Sewage Company is considering a commercial use for the facility, which has been unused for years.
