The Romanesque Cellar, Gdańsk
Facts and practical information
Refectory of the Dominican monastery in Gdańsk - Romanesque refectory discovered in 2005, once part of the Dominican monastery. It is the oldest preserved volume interior in Gdansk, with an area of 52 m². It is located in the Main Town, under Dominican Square, between St. Nicholas Church and Market Hall. It was built in the middle or in the third quarter of the 13th century. Most of the room has been preserved in good condition, despite the fact that the building was rebuilt several times. The object was situated on a very low first floor, about 1 meter deep in the ground. The refectory has a unique vault construction with four fields of elliptical vaults supported by pendentives and a central pillar. Initially, the object was planned to be buried again, but due to the objections of conservationists and lovers of historical monuments, as well as the intervention of the Ministry of Culture, the monument was taken over by the Archaeological Museum, which renovated it at the cost of 5 million zlotys.
Archaeological works began in 2005. On December 31, 2014, the refectory was opened to the public as the newest branch of the Archaeological Museum in Gdansk called the Roman Cellar.
