Church of Our Lady of the Rosary, Mikołajki
Facts and practical information
Church of Our Lady of the Rosary is a Roman Catholic parish church belonging to the Mikołajki deanery of the Diocese of Elk. It is located on Michała Kajki Street.
The present church is the former Evangelical People's House, belonging to the Evangelical community. Before 1939 evenings and plays were organized there and children had catechism lessons. During World War II the church housed a fire station. Then the Soviet troops arranged a stable in the building. In September 1948, work began to prepare the devastated People's House for the needs of Catholic religious worship. Within three months the renovation of the building was completed. With the permission of the Bishop's Curia, Father Wladyslaw Dudziak, parish priest of Mragowo consecrated the temple. The church was enlarged by converting a private apartment into a chancel. The altar was moved, the main entrance door to the temple was made, the stairs were made, and the sidewalk was cemented. The parishioners of St. Nicholas were very eager to get involved in the renovation, they did not regret their own efforts, most of the work was done by parishioners for free. In the following years stained glass windows were made. On the main wall of the church above the chancel, a panoramic scene of the Apparition of Our Lady at Gietrzwald in 1877 is depicted. To commemorate the 4th pilgrimage of Pope John Paul II to Poland, a tower designed by Mikolajcz resident, Jerzy Matloch, was added to the church and the parishioner-funded bells Ave Maria and John Paul II were hung in it. In 2007, new side altars made of oak wood were installed: Altar of Divine Mercy and Altar of Our Lady.
