Cmentarz Garnizonowy, Grudziądz
Facts and practical information
Garrison Cemetery in Grudziadz - a disused cemetery in the vicinity of the Grudziadz citadel, on 18th Regiment of Pomeranian Lancers Street.
Along with manning the fortress there was a need to designate a cemetery. Over the years three cemeteries were created in close proximity to each other, two have survived to the present day: the Garrison Cemetery and the War Cemetery. Apart from that, many of the fallen were buried in the citadel.
The Garrison Cemetery was established in 1807 for the burial of soldiers killed during the siege by Napoleon's army. Later the dead prisoners of war and during World War I and II German soldiers who died in Grudzi±dz hospitals were buried there.
In the interwar period the cemetery was a burial place for Polish soldiers. Especially during the Polish-Bolshevik war, when Grudziądz was a place to which wounded from the northern part of the front were evacuated.
Generals Stefan de Castenedolo Kasprzycki and Stanislaw Pruszynski were buried in this cemetery.
During the fights for Grudziądz in 1945 the cemetery was repeatedly hit by artillery shells. Unused and disorderly, it was falling into ruins. It was cleaned up during Willie Brandt's visit to Poland in 1970. Graves of Polish-Bolshevik war victims were plundered. In 1996 the German soldiers who died during World War II were exhumed and their remains were moved to a mass cemetery near Mławka. A small mound was made and a plaque commemorating the victims of the Polish-Bolshevik war was placed. In 2010 a plaque was unveiled listing these victims.
There are many matzevot, stelae and plaques preserved on the cemetery. The layout of the cemetery is visible.
