Kościół pw. św. Mateusza, Opalenica
Facts and practical information
Saint Matthew's Church in Opalenica - one of the Roman Catholic churches in the town of Opalenica. It belongs to Bukk decanate. It is located on Farna Street.
A late Gothic temple founded by Jan Opalinski and built by Wojciech Ruda around 1518, rebuilt after a fire around 1620. It was rebuilt in 1841, when it was enriched with a porch and a southern chapel of the Transfiguration, and in 1927, when a brick vault based on six octagonal pillars was demolished and the nave was covered with a wooden, plastered construction, resembling a cradle vault with lunettes, similar to that in the chancel. The original barrel vault from 1620, with the coat of arms of Lodz, has been preserved in the chancel. In the sixteenth century a chapel of Our Lady of Consolation was added next to the sacristy, and on its floor a chapel of Our Lady of the Scapular was placed. The interior of the church is dominated by the Baroque style.
The main altar, made by Italian artists in the early Baroque or late Renaissance style in 1649, contains a painting of St. Matthew painted in 1749 by Wenceslas Graff. It is accompanied by a copy of Murillo's painting The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, painted in 1929. In the side fields of the altar there are sculptures of St. Peter and St. Paul.
