Jan Kochanowski, Poznań

Jan Kochanowski Monument - a monument to poet Jan Kochanowski located in Poznań, on Ostrów Tumski, in the square by the Lubrański Academy building.

The monument stands on the site of a former garbage pit, where a rich collection of tableware and kitchenware from various times was discovered during archaeological research in the early 21st century.

The cornerstone was laid to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the poet's death in 1884, and the monument was unveiled in 1885. The author of the work was Antoni Krzyżanowski, a carpenter, builder and Polish independence activist. The medallion with Kochanowski's portrait was made by Wiktor Brodzki, the author of the tombstone of Laura Prze¼dziecka in Kamieniec Podolski. The work was done with funds from a public collection. In 1927 the object was moved to the Cathedral rectory, in 1940 it was destroyed, in 1984 it was reconstructed, and in 2002 it was moved to its present location. The base of the monument is stone and its panels are bronze.

In the years 1564-1574 Jan Kochanowski was provost of the cathedral chapter in Poznań, which meant a very high income - one of the highest in the life of the poet, who never stayed in Poznań.

A short distance away stands a monument to Cardinal August Hlond.
