Kościół pw. Niepokalanego Poczęcia Najświętszej Maryi Panny i Św. Wojciecha, Nidzica
Facts and practical information
Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary and Saint Adalbert - a Roman Catholic parish church belonging to the Nidzica deanery of the Warmian archdiocese. One of the registered monuments of the city.
The first mention of the temple and the Nida parish priest comes from the town's incorporation document dated December 7, 1381. Pastoral care was then exercised by two clergymen: the parish priest, appointed by the Teutonic Order, and the deacon employed by the town authorities. The church building was destroyed many times. The first time it burned down together with the market square in 1414, it was destroyed again in 1664, and then in 1804 and 1914. Subsequent renovations, reconstructions and rebuildings in the years 1579, 1689, 1725, 1817-1819, 1920-1924 gradually changed the external appearance and shape of the temple - from Gothic, through Neo-Renaissance to arcade style, which has survived to the present day. The builders and users of the first church were believers of the Catholic faith, after 1525 it was used by Protestants, and after 1945 it again belongs to Catholics.
It is not known what the church looked like until the 16th century. According to the church visitation in 1561, the building had a choir and separate benches. According to reports from 1684, the church had two naves and a tower on the north side. Currently it is a hall church, built on a rectangular plan. The main building material is brick, some parts were also made of fieldstone. The outer walls are plastered. The tower is situated in an unusual way. It adheres to the eastern elevation. It represents the Gothic style up to the third storey, while the gables are built in the Neo-Renaissance style. It was built on a square plan. It is covered with a tent roof. Clocks are placed on both gables. Inside the church galleries are built along the entire length of the side elevations. Two rows of windows are located only in the wall on the western side. The ceiling is made of wood in the form of coffers and refers to the Renaissance style. In the 1990s, the plaster was removed from the lower parts of the interior walls and the brick was exposed, thus reminding the original Gothic style of the church. The interior of the church was then given a new polychrome. On the side walls above the galleries were painted in the form of medallions the images of fifteen Polish saints and blesseds and St. John Bosco. The presbytery was also decorated with paintings of scenes: Annunciation and Resurrection and St. Adalbert.
As a result of multiple fires and wars, little of the original furnishings of the church survived. It is known that an organ was placed in the church before 1728. In 1735 Georg Caspari from Konigsberg renovated it thoroughly. Since 1820 an oil painting of Crucifixion of Christ, painted by artist Knorr from Konigsberg, was placed in the main altar. Currently in the main altar there is an image of the Immaculate Conception Mother of God. On either side are the statues of St. Adalbert and St. John the Baptist. At the top there is the Crucifixion Group. On the level of the main altar are placed two small side altars. On the left is the altar of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and on the right is the altar of Our Lady of Perpetual Help.
