According to the legend, it was given to the monastery by Prince Emeric of Hungary, son of Stephen I the Saint, who was to stay in Poland at the invitation of Bolesław Chrobry. In pursuit of a deer, the prince wandered away from his retinue and got lost. When he was about to kill the animal, a cross appeared between the deer's horns, and Emeric was blinded by a great brightness. An angel appeared to the prince and showed him the way to a nearby monastery and ordered him to leave the relics there.
