Rezerwat Głazowisko Bachanowo nad Czarną Hańczą
Facts and practical information
Bachanowo Boulderfield Nature Reserve on Czarna Hańcza River - a geological and landscape nature reserve with an area of 0.98 ha, under partial protection, located in Suwałki, south of Lake Hańcza, near the village of Bachanowo. It is an area in the fork of Czarna Hańcza River and its tributary - Kozikówka stream, covered with a large number of erratic boulders. The reserve is located within the Suwalki Landscape Park.
The reserve was established by order No. 130 of the Minister of Forestry and Wood Industry dated October 27, 1972.
The aim of introducing nature reserve protection in this area is to preserve a unique boulder formation which presents an exceptionally natural postglacial landscape. In a small area, there is a cluster of about 10,000 erratic boulders with perimeters ranging from 0.5 to 8 m. They are located on four terraces: in the river bed, on the bottom of the valley, on the terrace about 10 m above the water level of Czarna Hańcza and on the sand surface - about 25 m above the water level. They are mainly granite boulders, granite-gneisses, syenites, gneisses, sandstones, limestones, basalts, rhyolites, melaphyrites and porphyry.
The boulder field was created at the crossing of two glacial gullies. The boulders were brought here by the glacier from Scandinavia together with the mass of till. They were exposed as a result of the clay being washed away by the glacier's meltwater.
Currently, numerous species of rock lichens and mosses occur on the boulders - including a rare mountain species. Nowadays, the reserve area is used as a pasture.
