The cult of the Virgin Mary, revered as the Queen of Angels, has been developing in Zagłębie Dąbrowskie since the second half of the 19th century. The Basilica of Our Lady of the Angels in Dąbrowa Górnicza is a church with the privileges of the Holy See. It is the first sanctuary in Poland with the title of basilica, which was granted by Pope Leo XIII on March 19, 1901.
The temple was built in the years 1898-1912 according to the project of Jozef Stefan Pomian-Pomianowski in neo-Gothic style, as an addition to the church of St. Alexander built in 1875-1877. Its builder was prelate Gregory Augustynik. It was consecrated on September 29, 1912 by Bishop Augustyn Losinski of Kielce.
