Studzienka Kronthala, Poznań
Facts and practical information
Fountain with dolphins - a fountain located in the center of Poznań, in the axis of the central part of Marcinkowskiego Avenue, near the intersection with 23 Lutego Street.
Originally in this place stood a public city well founded by Edward Raczynski. After it was moved, in 1909, the area was beautified with the present fountain designed by Hugo Lederer from Berlin. The project was personally verified by Emperor Wilhelm II. The fountain was founded by the merchant Gustav Kronthal, hence the name Kronthal's Well. The cost of construction amounted to 25,000 then-current marks. The restoration of the building was first carried out by Edward Haupt, and then a comprehensive renovation was carried out in 2006, during which the shells were restored to replace the balusters installed after the war.
The water fountain, whose stone elements are made of shellstone, is surrounded by a curved balustrade, at the ends of which are placed copper sculptures of boys on dolphins. The terrain rises a bit in this place, which is accented with several steps.
According to Adam Pleskaczynski, editor of Głos Wielkopolski, the sculptures of dolphins in fact represent catfish, as evidenced by the anatomical structure of their mouths. According to his research carried out in 2003, the sculptures were created by August Gaul, a Berliner, one of the most eminent animalists of his time.
Next to the fountain stands a statue of Golem, and on the other side of 23 Lutego Street - a statue of Karol Marcinkowski. The whole is flanked by the buildings of the Post Office and the University of Arts.
